Something to Guide You

Any company you’ve ever worked for probably has a mission, vision and values. The idea is that they should be the basis for everything they do. Your life really is no different. What could be more important than your ultimate success and fulfillment? There’s no way to know exactly what steps to take as you pursue your dreams. However, your direction has to come from a clear understanding of what matters to you. You need your own personal mission, vision, and values to serve as a compass when you need direction. They are the foundation for planning.

You can chart a map to your dreams by creating your own personal mission, vision and values.

Now, that said, I recognize that that’s not the easiest thing to do. It’s an exercise that will require many rewrites. You will have to research, conduct interviews, and come up with and ponder answers to fundamental questions. In short, you’re going to have to do the internal work. Your dream is a moving target, so that work never stops. As you get closer to your dream, and the view gets clearer, you have a different vantage point. You’ll be at another level. Most importantly, you will be growing. As a result, you will have to reevaluate and adjust the Map over and over again.

The Flip Map

You can chart a map to your dreams by creating your own personal mission, vision and values. Then, use them to guide your actions. I call your personal mission, vision, and values the Flip Map.

  • The dictionary defines “mission” as a strongly felt aim, ambition, or calling”. What do you want to accomplish?
  • “Vision” is a mental image of what the future will or could be like”. How do you want the future to look?
  • “Values” are a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life”. What matters most?

Again, these are not easy questions. You have to be honest with yourself, and once you get the answers. Use the Plan Side of your Flip Book to write them down and use them as the basis for creating your Flip Map, something to guide you.

Dreaming is Hard Work

The word “dream” is so general…so intangible…at least it can be. But without dreams, life isn’t fulfilling at all. Every one of us needs something to strive for, something on the horizon. Having a dream doesn’t mean that you’re sitting around waiting for that “something” to come to you. Dreaming is an action. You are the hero risking everything for it…or better yet, becoming whatever the dream needs.

You have to become the Prophet of your own future.

That’s really it, you know. Having a dream is one thing, but living your dreams requires that you become everything the dream needs in order for it to manifest. That’s not easy, but it starts with one simple principle. Anything is possible when you begin with the end in mind. Some call it “intention”, others “affirmations”, or even “confessions”. They all deal with one issue…What are you saying about your life? Your business? Your family? Your relationships? You have to become the Prophet of your own future. What is this dream that you have?

What is that shred of an idea you have about what you want, what you see? Reaching it, living it, being THAT is a process called growth. You’ve heard the saying, “Success isn’t a destination. It’s a journey.” A place called “there” doesn’t exist. Your life is a journey, and your dream is a moving target that shifts and changes with you as you grow.

“…Write my answer on a billboard, large and clear…”

Flip Productivity™ Blog: Dreaming is Hard Work

Living your dreams is about making them V.I.V.I.D.™. The Flip Productivity™ System will help you plan, produce, and spend more time at play.

Have you ever heard or read a phrase that changed your life? Like me, you’ve probably had many. However, some stay with you. For me, one of those was from the Bible in the book of Habakkuk. In chapter two, verse two it says, “Write the vision, and make it plain…” My favorite version is in the Living Bible Translation, “…Write my answer on a billboard, large and clear, so that anyone can read it at a glance and rush to tell the others.” It felt like I’d found the key to my future!

Of course, I’d have to rush and tell others…that was the birth of the V.I.V.I.D.™ Model. It’s my proprietary process for growth and development. The secret is to write and rewrite and rewrite, and as you write, it becomes clear…vivid even. As your dream becomes VIVID, you can articulate it clearer, and as you speak and act accordingly, you’ll see it. Notice that speaking and acting precedes seeing?

Dreaming is hard work, but it’s worth every moment. The Flip Productivity™ System exists to help you plan your work, produce what you have planned, and spend more time at play. Your dreams will be realized when you take courageous action.

Living a Life at Play

When I talk about “Play”, I’m not talking about having more time for leisure. Rather, it is spending more time becoming yourself, living life at your best. You could describe it as finding the problem that you were created to solve. Play is about living in the now, being accountable for who you are to create the future you dream of and make a difference in this world. When you are discovering and building on your strengths, everything changes – your home life, your work life…your whole life. I was never very good at math, but as I tried to define “Play”, I was inspired to develop a Play Formula.

When you divide your time by developing your strengths – motivated by what matters to you – that’s the formula for living a life at Play!

Strengths + Meaning / Time = Play

Flip Productivity™ Play Formula

Flip Productivity™ is a life and action planning system that combines workshop instruction, individual coaching, and practical tools starting with the Flip Book planner.

Strengths. Your born abilities are your strengths. Not just skills that you have acquired through instruction or experience, your strengths are a part of you. Uncover them, and develop them, and you will be able to align who you are with what you do.

Meaning. What does achieving your dream mean to you? What are your motivating factors? And how can you translate that meaning into what you do?

Time. Time is a measure of motion, and Flip Productivity™ harnesses the enduring physics of motion to enable disciplined thought and action. Only the past and future can be measured. The present is where you control your past by designing your future with each step that you take, moment by moment.

When you divide your time by developing your strengths – motivated by what matters to you – that’s the formula for living a life at Play!

Who do you think you are?

Answering that question requires thought, action, and inner work. I have always been obsessed with assessments. Every time I tell my family about another one that I’ve taken, they inevitably roll their eyes, but I’ve learned an important lesson from them. Your personality cannot be summed up in a subjective test. However, I have found that taking personality assessments can provide insight into different aspects of your thinking, instinctive responses, emotional IQ, and so much more. And depending on the stage of life I’ve been in, each one has given me the words I needed to describe my strengths and define my challenges. When I couldn’t articulate my ideas, assessments have helped me get clarity and even develop my personal mission, vision, and values…the foundation for every action that I take.

I discovered the Gallup StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment as an MBA student at Saint Leo University. I now offer it to all of my coaching clients because it identifies your Top 5 Strengths and provides an action plan for building on those strengths. My top 5 are Activator, Relator, Maximizer, Strategic, Belief. Gallup read my mail. Click here to find out yours!
